What are your weight-control goals?

I want to lose enough weight so that I can shop in 'normal size' clothes stores! I'd be really thrilled to be a size 16, but I want to see if I go even further than this and perhaps even fit into a size 14 or 12.

What is your motivation for losing weight?

I finally realised that I'm unhappy the way I am, and I want to change. I've struggled for years to accept and love myself the way I am, but I haven't been able to succeed completely. I have to admit, I'm a little bit vain, and I want to be able to wear all the pretty clothes that you just can't get in my size. I also want to be healthier and feel stronger. A huge motivation was finding out that I have ulcerative colitis. If I don't keep it under control and take care of my body, I may have to have major surgery later in life. That's scary enough to keep me going even when everything else fails!

What is your weight-loss method?

The main changes I have made are to eat healthier food (especially snacks) and to exercise every day. I eat low-kilojoule snack bars, rice crackers and dried fruit now instead of the packet of chips or chocolate bars that I used to have. I always choose low-kilojoule options when it comes to milk, margarine, etc. I've really cut back on dairy products as well. I joined a gym, and I'm trying out different classes and different types of exercise to maintain interest and keep my motivation high. But the main change I've made is to the way I think about losing weight. Before, I didn't really believe I could do it, and my progress was very slow - I wasn't putting in as much effort as I could. However, about a month ago, a friend whose opinion I respect and admire very much, sat me down and had a talk with me. That made me realise that I wanted and needed to change. Since then I have achieved so much, and so much more quickly, than I ever thought possible.

What obstacles have you encountered while losing weight?

I am flatmates with my best friend, and he eats a lot of junk food: chips, chocolate, etc. I can't tell him not to eat what he wants! So there is always junk food in the house. Also, I don't work regular hours, so I don't eat at set times each day, and often I don't have time to make a proper dinner. I find this a huge obstacle to eating healthy food.

What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?

If you crave chocolate in the evening like I do, I found it really helpful to have a hot chocolate instead. It only has 1/5 of the kilojoules of a chocolate bar, and the warm drink helps to relax me as well.

How do you feel now that you're achieving success?

I know I still have a long way to go, but losing 10 kg always puts a smile on my face when I think about it, and makes me want to keep going and see what else I can achieve!

How have the products or services offered by helped you to lose weight?

The CalorieKing Food Diary has been so helpful in helping me realise just how many kilojoules I have been eating and how different foods compare. It makes me stop and think before eathing anything unhealthy - do I really want to have to put that up there in my Food Diary for other members to see? The Exercise Diary is great too, because one of my promises to myself is to have something to put in it every day, no matter what.
