What are your weight-control goals?

Over the last few years my weight climbed to a top of almost 100 kg in January 2004. I decided then that this trend had to stop and that I had to shed up to 40 kg as the extra weight was affecting my health, mobility, self-esteem and appearance. I knew that if I passed 100 kg I would lose all hope and not try anymore. All of last year I battled on starting diets, stopping, taking a bit of weight off, putting it back on. Finally, I joined in January this year (2005) and haven't looked back. It's taken me around six months to lose 10 kg and I have made a commitment to stay with this program for life, as it's the most sensible and responsible weight loss and maintenance program I've ever come across.

What is your motivation for losing weight?

I want to be healthy and get the most I can out of life. I like being active and involved in lots of things and I was conscious of all the limitations I was suffering as a consequence of being obese. I am still on blood pressure and cholesterol-reducing medication and want to eventually remove the need for these. I have a lot more energy and stamina now, and feel a lot happier in myself. I also want to be a good role model for my children.

What is your weight-loss method?

Since joining, I have kept to the recommended calories for food without any trouble. I certainly get enough to eat. I have found that when I plan my food diary and my exercise, I have more success. Otherwise the temptation is there to "graze" out of boredom or for consolation. At the beginning of my membership I also went to the pool daily and just walked laps, doing a bit of breaststroke or dogpaddle in the deep end. I would try to do laps for an hour. As I became stronger (I had trouble with my feet due to my last job) I added a short walk a couple of times a week. I also learned to drink a lot more water. The weekly CalorieKing University lessons were extremely helpful and helped to motivate me to focus on my goals.

What obstacles have you encountered while losing weight?

Weekly visits to my Mum's on Sundays always undid my resolve - her idea of hospitality was to provide a huge morning tea which extended into the afternoon. I found it impossible to resist the treats at her home, and every Monday I would start my "diet" again. I told Mum I would be happy with a cup of tea. I had to say "No thank you" to her hundreds of times. Going out to dinner is still difficult for me, but now if I overindulge I make up for it with extra exercise during the following week. Another obstacle is the dreaded plateau. In the past, a plateau would undo my resolve, but now I keep up the practices of recording food, exercising, and keeping motivated. A plateau can last around 4-5 weeks for me, but the weight DOES eventually start to move.

What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?

Believe in yourself. You are the only person who is going to lose your weight. Have some strategies in place to avoid temptation. I do not buy troublesome food, e.g. chocolate, ice-cream, biscuits, small goods, cheese. If you live with others, perhaps have a special shelf in the fridge and pantry for your foods. Drink your water, do your walking or exercise of your choice - even 10 minutes on a busy day is better than nothing. Don't cook separate meals for everyone. Get everyone to eat what you do, but in extra amounts if they don't have a weight problem. Plan your meals, your snacks, your exercise - don't leave it to chance.

How do you feel now that you're achieving success?

I feel more confident and relaxed. I am succeeding and I will continue to achieve my goals, not just my weight loss but goals in general. I feel very grateful for the support I get from other members. They are always there when you need them, and are extremely generous with the support they give. Nothing is too much trouble.
