What are your weight-control goals?

After spending most of teen years too embarrassed by my self image to have fun & enjoy that stage of my life I want to regain what I missed out on. I want to get to a weight where I am comfortable with my body and I can enjoy life instead of hiding behind the curtain.

What is your motivation for losing weight?

Turning 18 for me was a huge kick in the gut. I realised that I had come to a key point in my life and I wasn't where I wanted to be. I was morbidly obese, depressed and anti social because of how I was. It was on that day that the decision to lose weight was made. A lot of people doubted me but I pulled on through to come where I am today; right here, sharing my success! I haven't lost motivation throughout this journey and I am still going strong.

What is your weight-loss method?

Using CalorieKing's online diary, I have been able to educate myself about the nutritional values of the everyday foods I eat. When I started this journey I was firm on not wanting to go on shakes/pills or fad diets so Calorie King was perfect for me! I think the biggest thing for me was to educate myself. Never before had I understood what those numbers on the back of food packets meant or even cared to find out. These days I find myself enjoying my time in the kitchen preparing good food using good ingredients. I do think it's important to take the time to prepare & enjoy cooking your food, you will appreciate it so much more. Losing weight was obviously my main goal but I also decided I would try & eliminate many preservatives & nasty additives from my diet. I have done this by teaching myself how to prepare things like stocks/tomato sauces/jams etc... It takes a lot of time & organisation but it has been well worth it & my body is loving it. Another huge part of my weight loss is exercise. Move it to lose it! I like to walk every day & also try and incorporate things like weights, cycling & aerobics into my routine & don't discount all the incidental exercise. I walk everywhere now!

What obstacles have you encountered while losing weight?

I still live at home with my parents and sometimes when they are having that luscious cream bun or bar of Cadbury's chocolate it has been hard to stay away. I have had a couple of slip ups with all the temptation available but in the end I reminded myself "What would the old me have done?"

What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?

Read all the weight loss information available here on CK, especially in the great CK university section. To be educated about living healthy makes it so much easier. Take the excuses that you say over & over in your head and write them on paper, then screw the paper up and chuck it in the bin. Weight loss isn't time for excuses. Face your problems head on. Teach yourself to cook, I know the easy frozen dinners seem tempting but it is so much healthier to cook your own. Even having one night a week where you cook and prepare your dinners for the week to put in the fridge and freezer. Take lots of progress pictures. These are important when you are having moments of doubt about yourself. Document your journey!

How do you feel now that you're achieving success?

I feel fantastic! I can't even begin to describe what being 50kg lighter feels like. I can breathe and even walk easier. People don't even recognise me anymore from the big girl I used to be, it is the best feeling. I had an appointment with my GP a few weeks ago and he told me "You should write a book, you would inspire others", this just put the hugest smile on my face.
