What were your weight-control goals?

I wanted to get fitter, lose a lot of excess weight and tone up.

What motivated you to lose weight?

I had breast cancer at 48 in 2007; a hip replacement in 2008; my daughter's deb and my 50th birthday in 2009. I didn't want to look like a blown up balloon at my 50th birthday!

What was your weight-loss method?

I wrote down everything I ate online and also in a book that I took everywhere with me and then transposed onto the computer when I got home. I worked out at the gym every day - amazing when you see input vs. output how easy it can be. Checking the calories on EVERYTHING is a revelation, when you have a calorie limit each day.

What were some obstacles you encountered while losing weight?

Going out is always a challenge, you never know quite what you're eating calorie wise. I do like a glass of red wine and fitting that in and still losing weight was educational!

What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?

Do enter your food and exercise online, it's very motivating when you see that you have eaten/drank 1000 calories but you have exercised away 600 of them! Buy yourself a nice new digital set of scales that can go back to zero with every item you add. It's so easy to write down what you've eaten when you do it as you put it on your plate.

How do you feel now that you've lost weight?

I can now look in the mirror and not see the bloated old bat that I would have become otherwise! Clothes are many sizes smaller, I get great compliments from lots of people, especially from those I haven't seen for a while.

The online diary is a godsend. To be able to put in specific brands of food and drinks and get their exact calories is fantastic. I had bought a calorie book too, but it's much easier to do online. When I first started, the program told me that in 4 weeks I could be 3 kilos lighter -or something like that-, that was very motivating to start with. Seeing your progress on the graphs and charts is also very motivating.
