What were your weight-control goals?
I woke up 2 days before Christmas and decided to 'stop the rot'. I knew I had a tough netball competition I was umpiring coming up after Christmas and wanted to be fit for it for a change. So I started running each morning. Initially I just wanted improve my fitness for umpiring netball and to be healthy and any weight loss would be a bonus. Then when I joined CalorieKing, the diet got under control and the kilos started coming off, so with my fitness in check, I set myself a new goal - to be the healthiest I could be by eating the right foods and exercising regularly. I also wanted to feel nice in clothes that aren't in the Plus size section and to be able to keep up with the skinny young netballers.
What motivated you to lose weight?
Really I just wanted to get fit and healthy. And I was also tired of looking at photos of myself with my pudgy face and feeling like I looked like I was about to pop out of my skin!! On a more serious note, my dear aunt passed away shortly after joining CalorieKing of a heart attack and knowing that heart disease is in my family, I wanted to do something about it before it became an issue for me as well. I also really wanted to become a role model for my children as inevitably they've inherited the bad heart genetics from me and I don't want it to become an issue for them either.
What was your weight-loss method?
Daily exercise and being careful with what I was eating. I never really over indulged in junk food, but I probably ate more than I was aware of, so keeping a track of what I was eating was a big eye opener. I don't think you can beat old fashioned diet and exercise for losing and maintaining weight. I know the Jenny Craig's and shakes things work for some people, but for me I had to do something that I could sustain once I had reached my goal weight. And modifying my diet using my own food and finding the time daily to exercise is something that I find easy to keep up with. It has to become a lifestyle.

What were some obstacles you encountered while losing weight?
Initially getting up early each morning to exercise was a killer and for the first few weeks I'd never felt so crap even though I was going to bed earlier. I had to do the early morning exercise because I'm too exhausted at the end of the day when all the kids are in bed. But now I find getting up at 5:30am much easier and I'm feeling so much better after my exercise. I've also fount some niggling injuries and soreness a bit of a hassle at times, but I worked around them by switching from running to cycling or getting on the elliptical trainer or doing some light weights. I also found it hard in the beginning to stay away from my kids school treats (they don't eat a lot but they're there for an occasional treat), but once I started learning 'the numbers' and realised how hard I have to work to burn a tiny portion of their food off, it was easy to walk away. Plus, having my own healthy treats has helped alot and then I don't feel deprived. Things like nuts, yogurt, low cal muesli bars help me feel like I'm not just eating 'rabbit food'.
What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?
Keep with it. Initially you may wonder why you're doing it - you may not lose much, you might be unmotivated to exercise - but if you can picture yourself doing something you either haven't done in a while or never thought you could do (like fit into a size X, run a fun run, or for me, umpiring a Grand Final) and then you can dig deep to keep going. That is what has got me through many a tough run and helped me sit down to a meal of salmon and salad while my family ate pizza.
How do you feel now that you've lost weight?
Amazing. Everyone keeps complimenting me, wanting to know my secret and how much it costs. I love that I am not only achieving success, but that I have done it in a sustainable way - it's a lifestyle now. No short-term quick fix plans, just healthy living.
