What were your weight-control goals?

To regain self esteem and confidence. To start living life the way life should be lived, to the full. To be able to set life-goals that could be achieved and not only dreamed about.

What motivated you to lose weight?

Weighing in at a shameful 210 Kg, in mid January 2008 I visited a gastrointestinal surgeon who recommended I have the gastric sleeve procedure. The only problem was that I could not be safely operated on, I was simply too overweight, too much of a risk on the operating table according to the surgeon. My BMI was a whopping 72 and I was quite simply dying. The surgeon recommended I try and diet and asked me to return in two months to check my progress. Despite this the operation day was programmed for early May and I knew I had to make it to this operation or I was in serious trouble, this was a major motivator. Staying the way I was meant that I couldn't fulfil any of my dreams including  hopping on a plane and heading overseas. I couldn't buy nice clothes, couldn't go for job interviews, I’d become unsocial, I could go on forever! I was 26 years old and frightened, my weight was out-of-control, my life was out of control. I had to take action.

What was your weight-loss method?

Consistent good healthy food, consistent exercise and consistent support (at all levels). After losing the first 34 Kg I underwent a gastric sleeve procedure as a measure for longer term success. Right from the start I consumed a low calorie/fat evening meal combined with fruit and veg and gentle exercise. I had a copy of Allan Borushek's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter book and used it religiously. I kept my calorie and fat consumption within the recommendations of the book, I would not eat a food without knowing it’s nutritional values, the book has taught me so much. I soon discovered the CalorieKing website and began to use it on a daily basis. I found that the food database contained everything I was eating and liked how you could calculate nutritional values by entering the items weight. I kept a food and exercise diary which helped me stay on track, I made sure I was honest and included those snacks you need to have from time to time to keep you sane. The interactive tools section of the website was also very useful, I found the exercise calories calculator very handy. I found walking to be the best form of exercise for me. It doesn’t cost you and it exercises most of your body at once. I found my local park to be the best; I loved getting out into the fresh air, great stress relief too. Friends, family and work colleagues kept up the complements throughout my weight loss, they were my very own cheer squad and I think I shocked a few of them along the way!

What were some obstacles you encountered while losing weight?

It's not so easy when you're obsessed with food and you're too large to exercise safely and easily. But as I lost more and more weight it became easier, it was all or nothing, I wanted to make it worthwhile so I kept pushing forward. I had to re-evaluate and re-educate my idea of eating. Once I knew a little more about what I was eating I made sure I eat the right things and the right amounts of them.

What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?

Think long term. Set goals for the new you, the person you are going to evolve into. Celebrate milestones, let your friends, family and work colleagues celebrate with you. But most of all, don’t give up, you are worth it!

How do you feel now that you've lost weight?

I feel like I've won the lotto! I can’t put it into words really, sometimes I act a little silly because I just love being normal!
