What were your weight-control goals?
My goal was to lose about 90kg, so that my health would improve and I would extend my life.
What motivated you to lose weight?
I was so overweight that it got to a point where I thought my life was nearly at an end - and I was only 48! I had really reached rock bottom. I slept on about 6 pillows at night because I just couldn't breath properly on any less. My health was deteriorating, and my mobility was very limited. I really wanted to live so that I would see my two sons marry, and have children of their own, and I also wanted to see my great grandchildren. I wanted to live to a grand old age.... an active old age I should also say.
What was your weight-loss method?
The day before our youngest son turned 20 was when I decided that I could not go on the way I was any longer. I felt too that I didn’t want to go on just a diet but that I wanted a lifestyle change that would be sustainable, that would allow me to still go out occasionally and where I would not feel deprived so I would have a greater chance of being successful. I had been on more diets in the past than I could shake a stick at and all of them had let me down. I regained the weight I had lost and added more to boot. So with the constant support of my husband we started to walk, though of course, in the beginning it was not very fast and not very far. In fact I was lucky if I could manage to walk 50 metres. I suffer from Polymyalgia Rheumatica, and Osteoarthritis, so initially, it was very hard going, and although I still suffer from those things, my mobility has improved enormously.
I also started to weigh everything I ate and wrote it all down and worked out the calories. I did this by myself until a month later I found CalorieKing.com.au on the internet and that made things so much easier for me.

What were some obstacles you encountered while losing weight?
I had to come to terms with understanding when I was really hungry and when I just wanted to eat. That took some time because I had spent years of eating when I felt like it and not when I really needed to eat. I had to really search deep inside myself and ask why I was going to eat. I learned to use self-control so that I wouldn't go overboard. I think the mental barrier was the hardest thing to get over. I now find it a lot easier to make good decisions and choices when it comes to eating and how much, and I am finding it a lot easier to say 'no, thank you' to others who will insist on offering foods that I neither want nor would choose to eat now.
What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?
*I think the best advice I can offer is to do it for yourself. Everyone benefits when you are feeling healthy. My confidence has improved out of sight, because I feel and look better.
*Drink plenty of water. I couldn't believe the difference that made to me when I started to drink at least 2 litres a day.
*Try and walk at least 2-3 times a week. I really miss walking if for some reason I can't go. I feel so energized after it.
*Don't be distracted from your goal. Keep your focus on what is important, i.e. losing weight and becoming healthier. It's a long-term thing, not a quick fix.
How do you feel now that you've lost weight?
I can't tell you how great I feel in myself now! My high blood pressure has returned to normal, and I have been off medication for 3 months now.
Two years ago my blood test revealed that my thyroid was not functioning properly and that the way things were going I would be on thyroid replacement for the rest of my life. Well, that has turned around too, and my last tests showed that my thyroid is now functioning normally again.
I can go and buy clothes at the local department store, instead of having to send away to a specialist store for large clothing, which would cost an arm and a leg as well.
When I walk down the street, I don't feel like I stand out in the crowd, and people don't stare at me any more. In fact, a lot of people I know who haven't seen me for quite a while tend to walk straight past me - usually the only way they recognise me is when I am with my husband.
I now feel confident, happy, and for the first time in a long while, pretty.
How have the products or services offered by CalorieKing.com.au helped you to lose weight?
When I first started on my lifestyle change, before I joined CalorieKing, my bible was ClorieKing's pocket Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate Counter - in fact I had two, one for home and the other I took everywhere with me. It was never far from my side, I relied on it. Then, I discovered the CalorieKing.com.au site, and that has been wonderful. I like the University tutorials and reading the forums. Plus having the website tools work out the calorie value of my food and exercise is fabulous.
You too can be a success story!
CalorieKing has helped me understand the way to good weight loss, the reasons why I got to be the way I was, and the way to get to be the way I am now and also how to stay this way. Truly, I will be forever grateful, that there is a site like this and that I found it.
