What are your weight-control goals?
I really had no particular goals when I decided that I needed to lose some weight. My only thoughts were that I was too heavy and needed to reduce my weight to what I thought was a more sensible weight for my frame.
What is your motivation for losing weight?
I had for some time been overweight but had never got around to doing anything about it, apart from telling ‘her indoors’ that she was feeding me too much. (I still ate it, saying I could not waste good food.) However after I retired, I decided that it would be a good idea to consult a dietitian to determine what I needed to change in my diet that would return me to a slim good looking bloke. (Some suggested plastic surgery).
I needed to know what was bad about my diet that was stopping me from losing weight. After all, I considered that I already ate a healthy diet that comprised very little fat. Like most people I had hummed and hawed over this for some time but when I read an article in the weekend paper about CalorieKing, I decided that it sounded just the thing for me and I would give it a try.
What is your weight-loss method?
I realised that monitoring the calories I consumed was the best solution for me and that if I ate the calories of a man 20 kilos lighter than myself, at some time in the future I would become that man. I did not want to change my diet as I have too many likes and dislikes and would not be able to manage with any set meal plans. I was also aware that this was not a short term diet but one which I must follow for the rest of my life. Therefore the diet needed to encompass all of the foods that I liked, because I knew that I could not return to them when I reached my goal weight.
I quickly became aware of foods which were high in calories and which I would not particularly miss and cut them out of my diet (mainly convenience foods). I bought a new set of digital kitchen scales and these, along with CalorieKing, were to prove to be the key to my weight loss.
Another process which I put in place was to photograph the bathroom scales at each check-in. This was initially because I could not properly read the dial, but has proved to be an excellent log of my progress and although the feet look the same size the body is definitely reducing!

What obstacles have you encountered while losing weight?
I decided that I was going to follow this diet and nothing has diverted me from that. We have been away on a couple of occasions for holidays and have eaten large meals at hotel buffets. Although on my last trip I put on 1.5 kilos, it soon disappeared when I returned home. I believe that this would also have been the case when I was much younger and not overweight (and not regularly checking my weight). I suspect that fluctuations in weight of this amount are the norm and should not be a concern.
What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?
I have not had any eating problems since I started with CalorieKing and this is possibly because I am retired and therefore completely in control of my days' activities. I often speak to people who are clearly overweight and they give similar excuses to those I used. “I have tried everything to lose weight and nothing works” and “I only eat small meals and yet I still cannot lose weight.” If they are willing to listen, I tell them my secrets:
1. Buy some digital kitchen scales.
2. Weigh everything you eat.
3. Check the calories for each item.
4. Ensure the daily total is no more than the required amount for your desired weight.
You are guaranteed to lose weight if you follow this process.
How do you feel now that you're achieving success?
Losing weight has had effects that I did not expect and those that I had anticipated have not occurred. I had high blood pressure for which I take medication and this has changed only marginally. I still need to take the medication. My gastric problem has also persisted, although I did require a wedge pillow at night because of bad reflux and now I do not. My snoring has almost disappeared and previously used to keep everyone awake, except me.
Previously I could only spend about 20-30 minutes gardening before I needed a break. I put this down to back problems related to a disc operation I had over 30 years ago. Since I have lost around 15 kilos, I can work in the garden for hours, even doing strenuous digging and feel no ill effects.
I like the new me, even though sadly the big chest goes, along with the big stomach. I do feel much more energetic and healthier.
