What are your weight-control goals?

I want to lead a healthy life, so I'm committed to:

  • Exercising regularly and maintaining an eating plan which is practical and enjoyable;
  • Playing sport in summer and winter; and
  • Being accountable for the amount of food I eat and the exercise that I do.

What is your motivation for losing weight?

I was unhappy with my appearance, and felt as though I was in a rut health-wise. I knew I was very unfit, but it didn't hit me just how unfit I was until a friend and I started jogging; I struggled! That was not a situation I wanted to be in, as I'm only 26. I realised that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life being overweight.

What is your weight-loss method?

I follow a kilojoule-controlled diet. I started with a target of 6000 kilojoules a day.

I eat lots of whole-grains and low GI foods. I didn't bother with any high-protein/low-carb fad diets. I just tried to match my level of exercise with my food intake.

Along with having more healthy eating habits, I started exercising more. I went walking the first week. In the second week I added a little jogging. I continued to slowly add more jogging to my routine each week. I now run a whole circuit of 4.2km! I have been doing the same circuit for six months and what used to take me 50 minutes walking, now takes only 17 minutes running.

I now eat 7000 kilojoules a day and I am still losing weight.

What obstacles have you encountered while losing weight?

Time is my biggest obstacle! It takes time to cook and exercise. I am forced to get-up earlier and plan meals ahead of time to make sure I don't snack on junk food. After a while planning ahead became a habit, so it's easier now; it's part of my lifestyle.

What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?

I know that often the hardest thing is getting started - making that first step and getting off the couch, or getting up early and going for a walk. Change can be hard, so take the time to do it properly. Quick fixes just don't work in the long run.

Find an exercise partner. It has helped me a lot to have a partner to train with.
