What were your weight-control goals?

I was aiming to get to the healthy weight range. I had always been big-boned but started to increase in weight a bit more after I stopped playing basketball when I was 17. (I am now 24) I gained weight each year and every New Year's resolution would be to lose weight but I never put in the effort long-term. At the start of this year I was 94kg and for some reason my goal weight was 77kg. The healthy weight range for my height is 60-75kg but, as I said, I am big-boned and generally a bit wider than most people.

What motivated you to lose weight?

Well, it is strange, but what got me onto CalorieKing was a competition through a car club I am in. All the overweight people put their names down and committed to weighing in each week. By doing this we hope to keep one another motivated. Right now, I am winning the competition! But that really doesn't matter, as losing weight is about doing it for yourself. Also, I don't play a lot of sport but I have recently started playing touch footy and it was very frustrating trying to chase around all these skinny, fit people so I thought I would have to lose some weight and increase my fitness if I was ever to get any better.

What was your weight-loss method?

I tried to stick to the calorie limit per day. I found some good breakfasts that I liked and were healthy. I became a Subway-holic - I absolutely love my sweet onion chicken teriyaki subs! I started walking regularly and I do quite a bit of boxercise at home. But at the end of the day, the two biggest changes for me were switching from Red Rooster to Subway, and premix bourbon cans to bourbon and Diet Coke! I never realised how bad those things REALLY are for you.

What were some obstacles you encountered while losing weight?

The only real obstacle I have come across was people's perception of me. After I had lost about 10kg, some people were saying to me to stop as I had lost enough. I was still about 10kg above the healthy weight range and I felt that I should continue. It was difficult at this time with people telling me to stop because they thought I was looking too lean when I was still well above the healthy weight range.

What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?

After lunch, I would check my progress and see where I should be aiming for dinner. For example, if I was down on protein then I would make sure that my dinner focused on this. Drink lots of water and also diet cordial. I used to hate the stuff but now I love it. You just have to find a flavour that you like.

How do you feel now that you've lost weight?

It feels great that I have achieved my weight loss goal. I had tried to lose weight previously but to no avail. CalorieKing helped me stay on track and gave me some numbers to aim for. As I am an accountant, this helped me a lot! I have more energy now and am quite a bit fitter. I'm still not as fast as the skinny kids in football but I'm getting there.
