What are your weight-control goals?

Basically, at least, to halve my mass. At 50 years of age, I wanted my body-mass index somewhere under 30. The 63 BMI was dead scary. The height weight tables say I should fall in the 70-80kg range. My best token goal 15 weeks ago was to get myself back to my football (soccer) playing weight of 88-91kg back in 1979-1982. That seemed more realistic; the task ahead was already huge.

What is your motivation for losing weight?

The snide comments of idiots and the ignorant who can't accept fat/obese people (or other people with a physical difference). The outright nasty and hurtful comments of people worse than the idiots and the ignorant who seek to bully others for whatever reason. To increase my mobility. To be able to be on the go with my grandchildren. To stop being a part of Australia's so-called obesity crisis. To reform my lifestyle. To return to buying clothes off the rack.

What is your weight-loss method?

Cut alcohol from 20 serves per week (winter) and 30 serves per week (summer) to 3 or 4 serves weekly average. Cut bread consumption from 8-10 slices per day to an average 3 slices (or one decent sized roll) per day. Cut beef consumption. Increase consumption of fish and kangaroo. I was already a high consumer of fruits and vegetables but I vowed to increase that by eating more fresh garden salads. Avoid almost all hot chips and potato crisps. Just one serve (one-twelfth or one-sixteenth of) tortes or continental cakes per week instead of three or four. Drink fewer than five espresso skim lattes or flat whites per day as well as increasing black tea consumption. Dry-bake, dry-roast, steam, stir-fry in oyster sauce or brine. No toasted sandwiches. Eat apples or rockmelon for comfort food.

What obstacles have you encountered while losing weight?

I really miss the flavours of European sourdough breads and fruitcakes since I've put them on hold.

What tips do you have for others who are trying to lose weight?

Nothing feels quite as good as punching out new belt-holes every eight to 12 days! Until you experience true motivation, you will always wonder how other people do what you think you can't.

How do you feel now that you're achieving success?

In a single word, SUPERB. My BMI is already down to 54 (minus 9 in barely 15 weeks).
