Lack of energy-No time to make lunches

Ive been a member just over a week now. I'm doing pretty good with my calorie intake but the past two days I have been so extremely tired around 5pm that I feel like I could go to bed and sleep until morning.

It might be because I've been working 8 hour days the last couple week (I'm usually casual but covering someone's holidays atm) I have to be at work by 7am and I have never been one to wake up early. I wish I was!! But its so hard to get up at 6am and then I have to figure out what to eat for lunch in those few minutes before I leave. And when I get to work I dont always get to have my break (I'm a nurse so some days are flat out).

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of quick things I could make early in the week that can be stored in the frige to grab in a hurry??

Thanks in advance
Shaina

Some weeks I have to be out the door by 5.30am. What I do:
The night before I lay out the clothes I will be wearing
I have my coffee ready so I just push the button to start it brewing
I either get a frozen meal (leftovers) out of the freezer the night before and put in the fridge ready to take to work the next morning OR I get my lunch ready the night before (and this can and does include salad). If I'm taking a sandwich I make as much of it as I can and put things like tomato, beetroot etc in a container to add at lunchtime
My alarm is set early enough to do a minimum of 10 minutes dance dvd while my coffee brews. I have enough time to drink my coffee in a relaxed way while I read. I then have a shower, get dressed and am out the door by my allotted time

I will admit to having breakfast at work at about 6.45 - 7am (it's too early to eat before 5.30am!!!!)

I make our lunches when I make dinner. It's usually a serve of the nights protein and a salad. It doesn't take too much time to make extra of everything when I already have it out. I usually pack any dressing in a small container on the side. With a piece of fruit and a tub of yoghurt, I'm all set.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. I love the tub of yoghurt idea. I do that sometimes when the individual tubs go on special at the supermarket. I also love the handful of almonds idea.

I will definately need to make a habbit to make my lunches the night before. Its just too much of a rush in the morning to do all that and get ready for work.

I'd love to be able to get up a bit earlier like you Stef so I can sit and enjoy my cup of coffee! Ill keep trying. I want to be a morning person but when that alarm goes off im so focused on how good it feel to lay in bed lol.

I have to leave the house by 5:45 so i pack my lunch the night before with a bunch of snacks and put it all with my work bag. I also realised that I used to waste a lot of time getting ready in the mornings I now get up, showered, hair done, eat breakfast (before I go) and all my stuff packed to go in 30 mins.

I often have pita pizzas for lunch with all the bits pre chopped (it takes some work but I eat them for several days) i also simply eat sandwiches or cook extra chicken with dinner the night before and have it with salad etc.

My lunches for this week made x4 containers worth - very quick, easy, and tasty :)

1/4 bag or 50g ish of mesculin lettuce
1/4 avocado, diced
4-5 slices of cucumber
25-30g breast chicken, diced
25g garlic marinated fetta, diced

All up, 201 calories and a perfect thing to eat in 5-10 minutes. I ate it at my desk today :) plus - 14g of protein and only 2g carbs :)

I still have 2 in the fridge for tomorrow and Thursday, and will decide on Friday's lunch when I get to it :P

Try making up different salads - add pine nuts, mint, basil, dressings, carrot, capsicum etc - anything you eat or like to eat - chop it all up and separate it into containers. weigh everything so you can get the calories right and voila, a delicious healthy filling salad :)

I usually do a cook up on weekends.

I buy about 10 plactic containers and cook up some healthy meals to put in the freezer. You dont have to eat them all the time but they are great for the days you come home exausted.

some Examples of frozen meals you could cook :
Chicken breat and vegetables
Chicken breast and Brown Rice
Chilli Con Carne
Steak and vegetables (Steak reheats nicely aswell)
Chicken Curries

Ok pretty much anything healthy and freeze it.

I do lunch when I do my dinner also. Plus ( and many may disagree with me) I have a shake on hand for emergancies. I don't use them as part of my plan, but I have to admit they have come in handy over the months a few times. I always have one in my glove box as I only have to add it to a bottle of water and shake when time is really short.

But at dinner I figure I am already making my food for dinner, so I just make the same for lunch or throw a quick salad together.

Time management is your friend when you have no time lol

I get up at 5am, walk for 30 mins, shower and dress, then make my lunch, which is usually salad with shaved turkey, or leftover chicken, or some shredded cheese. Plus a couple of small serves of fruit. I've tried making lunch the night before but somehow things get in the way and I can't keep it up. Also I'm not big on sandwiches or cooked lunches.

I will occasionally have a 200 cal shake for breakfast (Aldi's are cheap and yummy) if I know I'll be eating more than usual that day.

Aldi also have nice bikkie and cheese packs that are only 85 cals. Forme and Soleil yogurts are low calorie and non fat. I sometimes have these if I'm sick of salad. And a nice ripe banana can fill you up.

I get everything ready the night before too. Not a morning person and don't like feeling rushed or flustered first thing either. Some weeks i cook a big batch of something to take for lunches. You can do different soups eg i'll do pumpkin one week and then vegie/barley the next.

Otherwise some other quick easy things are the tins of tune with vita wheats. Or a quick rice cup, cup or so of frozen chopped vegies and tin of tuna, throw it in the microwave and it's ready in 1-2min.

I like having the rice, tuna, vita wheats in my drawer at work and if you have a freezer at work you can keep a bag of diced frozen veg. That way if there's ever time i forget my lunch or didn't have time to prepare i already have stuff on hand to make up a quick healthy lunch.

Hey Got2doit

I totally agree with you on the shake, and if it is a quality shake the sugar isnt too high and is easy to get one that is low carbs high protein.

I rekon its better to have a shake than fried chips or KFC or maccas

Wow, these are all wonderful suggestions. I love the idea about keeping things at work and making it there. I would so do that but I dont really have my own fridge or anything so things would probably go missing...especially when I'm not there a few days in a row.

I think I will get some sliced lunch meat at the deli each week to have to make quick sandwiches or pitas. (I love the pita pizzas idea!)

I actually completely forgot about vita wheats! I've had them before and they're really nice. I think Ill have to start having them again

I think shakes are fine too but only in those very few instances where you have no other option. At least its something.

Keep the ideas coming! Love reading them =D

PHOTOFANATIC - Yes some awesome suggestions,
I love vita wheats too - or even better at the Lunch slices by Vita wheat, One big wholegrain square filled with grains and seeds. I have two with tuna and salad..
i know how hard it is. this is what i do, and im up at 6am, with two little boys just started at school.

write a list of breky's and lunches and snacks...have a play in CK to work out what is a good calorie allowance..then add them to CK and save as meal's..that way you dont lose them
I vary it up, up and go vive, (breaky or snack as you dont have to refrigerate), tuna and crackers, left over dinner (freeze bits of the chicken in zip bags for your salads or sandwiches ect) soups, yes some of this is processed but to get you started so you dont have to think and find out what a serviing is this will help. Then you can be more adventuous!
Do a cook up and freeze things. Check out ppl's diaires to get ideas.

The secret is to be organised..if you dont plan its so hard to find the time to 'think' of what to have.
Best of luck:smile1:
