I need some advice/support, regarding a plateau, if that’s what I’m going through.

The beginning of the year (01/01/2010) I weighed 86kg. I joined a Bootycamp end of January, I’ve been going twice a week for the past 9 weeks and I love it, I have finally found something I love to do Re: Exercise. We do loads of different stuff, weights, boxing, running, lunges, squats, it’s great I look forward to going. I have a Polar7 HRM and I burn between 450-650cals per session. I also have a tready which I go on a couple of times a week for 30-45mins doing interval walking/jogging, burning between 300-500cals.

CK recommends I eat 1400 cals per day. I know often I don’t reach this especially on the days I exercise. This week I’ve tried to eat more but after exercise I just don’t feel like eating.

Bootycamp is late afternoon and I do my tready sessions after work at about 3.30pm.

This is how my weight loss has gone over the past 12 weeks or so

1st Jan 86kg
7th Jan 85.5kg
14th Jan 84.8kg
21st Jan 84.7kg (joined bootycamp) (TOM)
28th Jan 85.8kg (WTF?)
4th Feb 84kg (yay)
11th Feb 83.8kg
18th Feb 83.9kg (TOM)
25th Feb 83.7kg
4th March 83.7kg
11th March 83.1kg
18th March 83.7kg (TOM)
25th March 83.4kg

As you can see, it appears I’ve been on a plateau for approx 6-7 weeks. I've only lost 2.6kg since the beginning of the year and only 1.3kg in the last 9 weeks.

I fill in my diary truthfully, so feel free to check it out. I have also been blogging on CK daily.

I have put new batteries in my scales, I have increased my fibre and water intake. I try to stay within my sodium and fat allocations.

I have lost cms’ because my clothes are looser and some clothes that were too tight before BC now fit me. Don’t get me wrong I am happy about this, but my BMI is Obese, I have just under 20kg to lose to get into my healthy weight range. I am frustrated and quite upset that my efforts are not reflected on the scales. I know I shouldn’t be stressing over numbers on the scales, but I have weight to lose. I’ve never had this much trouble in the past, I’m so much more focused, motivated and determined then before and I just don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere, I can’t get out of the 80’s. I’m very surprised I haven’t given up before now. I will keep going because I do love BC.

But is this normal…..my only other thought is to go on maintenance cals for a couple of weeks (as per a thread I read yesterday) and make an app at the Dr to have a check up/blood test???

Cheers
Janey :)

Hey, I do bootycamp too! Actually I see some similarities to me. I got stuck around the 82 mark for around 5 weeks too. It's pretty normal for this to happen, and losing the CMS is the same for me. Generally your body may be redistributing, so gaining some muscle and losing some fat, which explains the CM change but steady weight.

I wouldn't stress about it. Focus on doing the exercise, keeping the food intake steady and it will come along. I just started going down again after my plateau.

One alternative is to have about a week of maintenance calories, just slowly add 100 cals a day for a week before going back down. This lets your body relax a little and not freak out that you're losing all this weight.

Hi Janey,

Do you often eat the same foods? I only ask this because I fluctuated between 57-58kg for the whole year last year, it drove me insane!

I joined the Michelle Bridges challenge 5 weeks ago and have dropped down to 55.7kg, the lowest ever. She has calories set at 1200 calories (which I was doing anyway) however I am contributing the loss to eating different foods, I was in a bit of a food rut prior to the challenge, eating pretty much the same thing in day in, day out, week in, week out because it was easy and I knew it's calorie content, it was all healthy foods but I think perhaps my body got used to it?

She also advocates small dinners too, usually pretty low in carbs, so if you are having big dinners you could also try that?

Anyway, that is just an idea from me, change up the food if you have been sticking to the same things.

I do pretty much eat the same foods week after week, all healthy. I am so over salad, just the thought of it makes me want to gagg.

I will try some different foods, not really sure what though?

I don't have big dinners and I have pretty much cut out my night time eating, which I used to struggle with.

Hi Janey

Your weekly averages look really similar to mine. I've been on a plateau for about 4 weeks now (but still losing cms). This week I've decided to get my carbs down to CK recommendations (normally I'm up around 170g-180g but am now trying to get closer to 120g). I'll post back if I have any success in the next couple of weeks. I'm also going to try Bre's suggestion about changing up the foods, I tend to eat the same meals day in day out.

Dropping the carbs can be a good way to kickstart things again. Try something like a day where you eat only protein - hard work, but will get a result.

just an idea, try getting your sugar intake down.
I've cut out sugar except for what's already in fruit etc and i've seen a big difference.

Rose

Edited to add - i was told by my nutritionist that if you look for food that has less than 5g per 100grms of sugar

You have said you have lost centimetre and your clothes are loose? Perhaps you are turning fat into muscle...? Muscle weighs more than fat. Just a thought but really I dunno

I don't really have alot of sugar in my diet, but my carb intake is sometimes over my recommended CK limit, so I will try reducing that to around what I'm suppose to have which is 153g.

Perhaps it's muscle, but I have weight to lose so I just thought my effort would be reflected more on the scales.

I'll keep plodding along.

Scales are odd, fickle things. I've only really lost around 4kg on the scales since January, BUT I have dropped a whole dress size and heaps of people are commenting. Don't rely only on the scales or you will give up without realising you really are succeeding.

I'm getting my husband to put the scales in the back of his car and take to work, I'm not weighing in next week, but will weigh in the following week before I go on hols to Cairns for 10 nights.

Thanks so much for the reassurance.

Another BootyCamper! Isn't it awesome? My trainer is the nicest!

I have had very slow weight loss (from 70 kilos at New Years to 67 this week) and although it's frustrating, I'm not worrying because I know I'm working out (I do an extra day per week at BC) and eating well. I started Booty Camp's Overhaul eating plan this week (it's on the website and has 6 weeks of eating plans), it's day four and considering I NEVER EVER diet because I don't stick to it more than about 1/2 a morning, am going well and started losing weight again this week.

I agree with a lot of people above- you KNOW you're working hard and eating well, so be patient and let it happen.

Good luck!

Bootycamp is awesome, my trainer is great too, very encouraging.

Yeah, I'm over my little tanty from yesterday, lol, I won't bother weighing in for a couple of weeks and just keep doing what I'm doing.
