I have a question... by the way this was a struggle for me just to ask this question LOL I am not good with new things. Finally found my way around it.

My ultimate dream is to become a runner, right now I jog here and there. What's the best thing to get me started? Also am I kidding myself, I am no where near goal weight?

Initial weight - 91kgs:nono5:
Starting weight with ck - 83kgs
Current weight - 77.1kgs
Goal weight - 58kgs:thumbu2:

Your ultimate dream is definitely achievable! =D Most of us have been in the same spot as you at some point, and whatever you do, do not let your weight get in the way of your dream! My recommendation for anyone struggling with the transition from walking to running is to jump into the Couch to 5K program. There's a link and some podcasts out there somewhere, can't remember off the top of my head but I'm sure someone out there can supply the details. Its a great program, and designed to walk you through the transition (pun intended ;)).

Personally, I don't believe in the term "jogging"... To me, "jogging" is for people in the 1980s with big hair, g-string leotards and leg-warmers ;) If you're moving faster than a walk, then you're running, regardless of the speed. Credit where credit is due eh? Good luck and keep checking back with us!

Cheers,
~~Nikki (http://talicca.blogspot.com)

Jen, I've started a special Couch to 5k thread in this group: http://www.calorieking.com.au/community/forums/posts.php?forum_id=158&thread_id=87722

Also, see www.c25k.com for full details on the program.

You can definitely do this. Many, many people have gone before you and achieved this goal.

Jen - C25K is the go. Don't be afraid, join us!! I'm up to Week 7 now.

Rob/Knoddie has set up a thread in the Running Group for it. There's also a thread in the general forums. Have a look. LEt us know if you need any help. There's a website, free podcasts to help you along. Plus those of us who have either done it or are in the process of doing it.

Good luck! You CAN do it.

I have a question...

How much impact do you think that losing weight has on your running performance? While losing weight you're theoretically eating 500 calories less each day than if you were maintaining. So does this lack of energy make you run slower?

Two days before a fun run I eat back all my exercise calories (normally I don't) and the day before I eat maintenance calories. This is to make sure I have energy for the race, don't know if it makes a difference though...

Interesting thought Leo... I've never thought about the calorie consumption part of it only the "if I'm thinner I'm lighter and therefore might be able to run faster/further due to less weight to cart around"!

For those who find the C25K confusing, I did it a different way which follows the same principles but is much simpler. No distances to worry about, simple time increments, so you don't need a track or a podcast to help you. I originally found it in Men's Health years ago, others may like it so here it is:

You should be already walking at least 30min, 3 days/week. If not, add a week of walking at the start.

Week 1: Run 2 min, Walk 4 min, Repeat 5 times
Week 2: Run 3 min, Walk 3 min, Repeat 5 times
Week 3: Run 4 min, Walk 2 min, Repeat 5 times
Week 4: Run 5 min, Walk 2.5 min, Repeat 4 times
Week 5: Run 6 min, Walk 4 min, Repeat 3 times
Week 6: Run 7 min, Walk 3 min, Repeat 3 times
Week 7: Run 8 min, Walk 2 min, Repeat 3 times
Week 8: Run 9 min, Walk 2 min, Repeat 2 times then Run 8 min
Week 9: Run 13min, Walk 2min, Repeat 2 times
Week 10: Run 14min, Walk 1min, Repeat 2 times

Run 30 min! Repeat!

Interesting question Leo and something I've been thinking about lately. Up until now losing weight hasn't seemed to affect my running - apart from making it easier I suspect as there's less of me to lug round! And really I don't think I would have lost all the weight I have if I hadn't taken up running.

However, just recently I've been running more than ever before(averaging at least 40km per week and increasing slowly as I train for a half marathon) and I've noticed that I'm hungry all the time and really craving carbs like I haven't for a long time. I've also kept up my other exercise and I do 3 or 4 cardio classes as well as 2 or 3 Pump classes per week. As a result I've reassessed my priorities and decided that at least until after the half, I'm not going to worry about my weight. I decided it was stupid to be doing the amount of training I'm doing on that sort of calorie deficit. I'm not going all out crazy and eating whatever I want but I've changed my profile to maintain instead of lose and I'm definitely eating back all my exercise calories. I'm also not going to weigh myself over this time. If I notice my clothes getting much tighter I may reassess where I am but otherwise my priority for the next few weeks is having enough energy for my running.

BTW, I never used C25k either(didn't know about it) but I did something vaguely similar when I took up running, based on my ipod. I walked initially, then tried running a little bit every time I went for a walk. Once I could manage about 5 minutes I created a mix on my ipod that was all songs about 4 minutes long and used that for my programme. I'd run around the lake near my house(3.5km) and I increased like this:

Week 1: run one song, walk one song, rpt until right round the lake
Week 2: run two songs, walk two songs...
Week 3: run two songs, walk one song...
Week 4. run three songs, walk one song...

You get the picture. By the time I was up to about five or six songs I could make it right round the lake and after that I just gradually increased until my regular run was about 5km. I stayed at that for a while and started increasing once I entered some fun runs. Now I've got my Nike ipod thingy I go by distance not "songs" but it was a good way to get started. I had read similar programmes to the c25k but wasn't exactly sure how to time myself without looking at my watch constantly. If I'd known about the podcasts I probably would have used them.

I used c25k up to week 6 at which point I made it to 30mins (but not 5km)... after that I had the confidence to just keep pushing myself.

As of Sunday I've run 8km.

I put it down (partly) to having a good running mix on my ipod... but I'm not sure if anyone else would appreciate my mix bce musical preference is a pretty personal thing!

I do think some of my improved running speed is due to having less fat to carry around. I was 7.5kg heavier when I did my first fun run. There are even calculators on the web that estimate how fast you could run at different body weights.

Leo, i think you're doing the right thing with your eating before a race.

It's important to watch the fuel level though. For a while I wasn't eating enough cals, carbs especially and I started to feel a bit crook, and not very strong.

I reckon just see how the body feels, and adjust accordingly.

Because I have found the winter so hard with my training for the C2S, I have decided to go the 4km and run the whole distance. I will treat it like a race and get a pb out of it. I think that this is the wisest choice for me to make at this point in time.

I made a snap decision to start running after my BF told me he thought I didn't have the right shape to be able to run (big boobs). Being stubborn, I decided if he didn't think I could, I would prove him wrong :p

I did it all based on time increments. I don't have fancy technology like HRMs or my own treadmil, so I just headed to the local sports field.

At first I could run for about 5 mins and would have to stop, so I simply decided to increase my time every day by one or two minutes. By the end of the second week I met my first goal of being able to run for 20 minutes non stop. So then I set another goal for doing 30 mins and then 40 mins and so on.

Once I hit the 20 min mark, I started to look at speed as well. My initial running speed was barely what you could consider actual running. I did occasionally try it out at the gym and that gave me a good idea of my average speeds.

At the moment, I can do 40 minutes at around 8km/hr. That includes a couple of hills and stairs to raise the heart and challenge me.

So it's possible to do it when overweight, and when you've got enormous boobs and when everyone says you can't. I'm short and in the obese BMI category.

Just take it at your own pace and push yourself a little bit more every time you do it.

It'll definately help with the weight loss too. I've not lost massive amounts, but I've started to lose much more since I started. Nowadays I try to run 5 days a week when I can (although recently it has only been 3-4 times).

My tready is broken, but will be fixed soon. I prefer the gym and outside, but when I have sick kids at home I can begin to feel a bit defeated with running. I am again at the point of not having done any regular exercise for a few months. I am hoping having even a cheap tready at home will help me run.

Can anyone suggest a mix of good running songs - ie popular music with the right beat for running. I'm not too much of a tech head to search or put stuff together but I would really love to have a song list that I can compile - any suggestions? I don't mind the Robert Ullreys music, but it's just annonymous bland music - I love music from actual known artists! Like what's on the radio - does this make sense?

This is a bit embarrassing, so I didn't want to start a new thread....

Here goes.

I started "running" last week and have found that I am having trouble with "wobbly bits".

I am very small in the bust area - so no problems - it is actually around my stomach where I seem to carry all my weight.

Everything seems to move up and down far too much and when I increased my intensity this week my back is starting to hurt - I suspect from the extra movement around the middle rather than the running itself.

I have been working on my abs quite a lot, doing hovers and crunches every other day, do a few classes a week (step mostly) and my weight program.

Should I hold off on running until I have lost weight (stats below)?

Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Yours in embarrassment,

Kathy

Don't hold off! Running is cardio and cardio burns fat so by running you may reduce the wobble... crunches and hovers etc will build up your abs but if you dont get rid of the fat you won't be able to see the muscles you're creating... well that's my take on things anyway and I'm no expert!

What do you wear to run in? Perhaps you need to wear a tight singlet to keep the wobble under control... and if you arent comfy just wearing that you could wear it under a t-shirt or something looser (might get hot in 2 layers tho). I find that legging help too... not the hipster ones but the ones the come up to around your belly button... same deal - if its tight it keeps everything in.

Lucky you have small boobs...mine arent huge compared to some (DD) but I wear an underwire sports bra and then a sports crop thats deliberately 1 size too small... does the trick tho =D

Don't know how helpful that was... I might be way off track but I'm sure someone will come up with something better :)

Michelle, I agree with Rob - you need to choose your own music as only you know what you like and what works for you.

My actual running playlist is over 300 songs so too long to post here, but FWIW here's the list I've put together for races. It's songs that I find particularly motivating, usually because they're nice and fast and generally fun. As you can see, my musical tastes are fairly varied - a lot of JJJ but with some cheesier stuff thrown in.

Sarah - Eskimo Joe
Blue Orchid - The White Stripes
Laid - James
Express Yourself - Madonna
Fig Jam - Butterfingers
Lady Marmalade - Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & Pink
I Don't Feel Like Dancing - Scissor Sisters
Take Your Mama Out - Scissor Sisters
Music - Madonna
Ta Douleur - Camille
The Bold And The Beautiful - The Drugs
LDN - Lily Allen
Gold Digger [Feat. Jamie Foxx] Kanye West
Somebody Told Me - The Killers
The Denial Twist - The White Stripes
Love Me Or Hate Me - Lady Sovereign
You're Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl) - The White Stripes
This Year The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree
Yo Mama - ButterFinger
Into The Groove - Madonna
Black Betty - Spiderbait
Don't you want me baby Human League
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight ) - ABBA
Pretty Woman - Shankar Mahadevan
Hung Up - Madonna
Pump It - Black Eyed Peas
Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now) - Bob Sinclar & Cutee B featuring Dollarman, Big Ali & Makedah
This Is the World We Live In - Alcazar
Voodoo Child - Rogue Traders
U + Ur Hand - P!nk

This isn't in any particular order. When I run I like the songs on shuffle so I get surprised. And my power song is Lose Yourself by Eminem.

Kathy, don't be embarassed :) We runners face all sorts of problems and you can rest assured that you won't be the only one to have experienced something! I actually had that problem myself when I was down to even around 60kg, and what worked for me was compression. I wore tight bike pants pulled high up to my waist to hold everything in, and had a tight singlet on over the top to hold everything the bike pants missed. I then wore a looser shirt over the singlet, and while I wasn't terribly concerned myself, you could wear shorts over the bike pants as well. Good luck with it :thumbu2:

Cheers,
