Annoying red exclamation point on today page

Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I just joined calorie king yesterday after trialling one other site and have been tracking my calories for two days. There are some clunky bits, but I'll get used to those.

What really annoys me:
CK has decided I should be consuming 1390 calories a day. I thought that wasn't right (I had planned to consume about 1500-1600 calories). Then I realised it is subtracting my exercise from my calories consumed.

Anyway, for today, I have consumed 1431 calories. Then I add in my exercise, which comes to 616 calories (I am at a fairly high level at the gym, which has a machine that tracks and calculates calories burned -- just haven't been losing much weight, which is why I thought I needed to start working on the diet as well).

So then I get this at the bottom of the food and exercise diary:
You have used 815 out of your net daily budget of 1390 calories and have 575 calories remaining. 27% of the calories are from fat, 22% from protein, 51% from carbs and 0% from alcohol.

And on the "today" page it says:
Your net calories today are: 815 / 1390 cals
and it has an annoying red exclamation point next to it. Like this is a step I haven't completed.

Seriously - I'm not going to eat any more - I'm following a diet plan from a magazine fairly closely - with the exception of substituting fish and vegetarian options for meat.

Sorry if that is too much information - but how can I make this go away? Or do I just have to ignore it?

Erm well I guess you'll just have to ignore it - if you are following a diet plan different to the CK recommended, then you're probably not going to get the green ticks. CK recommends you eat back your exercise calories to your daily limit otherwise you're effectively under eating.

Sorry I can't be much help *shrugs*

Well this is where you have to decide which program you want to follow. CK program recommends eating back your exercise cals. You need a minimum of 1200 cals AFTER exercise to meet your basic BMR for the day. Maybe read through the CK program (under the club menu) and then decide. Also check you are actually entering everything you eat and WEIGHING everything. It's very hard to stay fat if you are consistantly under eating regardless of the starvation mode ideas.

ETA - also give it a few weeks. Everyone always comes on in their first few days saying they can't meet their target but rarely after the first few weeks.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I'm going to talk to my personal trainer next week and see what he thinks about this. I think the problem is that most basic diet plans allow for 1600 calories - but when I go and burn 6 or 700 calories in the gym it's not going to work out. Then the days I don't go to the gym it says I am overeating!

I didn't even look at the CK diet plan until after you guys mentioned it! Unfortunately I don't see how I could follow it, for a number of reasons (mainly it contains a lot of food that I think is unhealthy or that I won't eat).

I'm having another one of those days in which I've eaten all my meals, and even putting in the mango I plan to eat later it says I need to eat another 500 calories.

You don't have to eat all of them back every day. It's more of a guideline, especially as some people come to the program knowing nothing about what they are doing. If you understand how your body works and know how many cals you need to eat then just use it as a gauge to know that you are on track.

ETA, none of us use the diet plans, they are considered by some to be rubbish here.

Oh and also, I used to roll cals over to the next day when I trained in the evening a lot.

the meal plans suck, apart from anything else why all the bloody fruit juice when the CK program warns against it? I always have exclamation points because I don't log water but it is no biggie. Why does it annoy you if you don't want to follow the CK program anyway by not following the recommendations re eating back exercise calories? This place is a wonderful free tool that I use to suit me rather than making me suit it. I set different calorie targets and want a higher ratio of protein so I fiddle and tweak and take what it useful, disregard the rest.

No need to pet the sweaty stuff nor to throw the baby out with the bathwater or any other cliches that come to mind after a little too much champers on NYE ;)

There is a reason for eating back exercise calories that is explained well at links on http://www.bodyscan.com.au/non-athletes/ (case study 2 is my fave) but your exercise calorie burn may well be very different to the CK estimates so always remember that this is about you finding your way, CK suggests a path but you are free to wander on and off as suits.

The CK diet plan is simply to follow the recommendation CK sets for you, you don't have to use the meal plans too.

However there are two points I must make:

1. Machines at the gym rarely provide accurate calorie estimates, so don't take them as gospel
2. If you are eating 1600 calories say, and exercising 700 on top, technically you are under eating, as your net calories are quite low, under 1000 calories per day, which isn't a good thing.

Anyway, you choose how you want to use CK, but if you chooses not to follow its recommendations, all you can do is ignore its warning signs, as you've chosen to disagree. You can't change them, as that's the program.

Thank you Millyjane. It looks like it might be more realistic for me to try to average to the recommended calories over the week... one of the problems is on those days when it wants me to eat 400 or 500 more calories I'm just not that hungry in the evening. Then on the days when I don't exercise I sometimes feel quite hungry.

And thanks also Thyla, the fruit juice was what really jumped out at me. And I like your attitude, even if you did have a few before you posted :)

And Spersephone... thanks for making the point about the exercise machines. I didn't realise how inaccurate they are (the gym I use has a whole system that is based on tracking all your exercises and your exercise calories for you so you can increase the amount you're doing over time).

I've done a little more reading over the past few days and I think if I try a little harder I can get my net calories closer to the recommended amount. But of course it's going to be nearly impossible to do exactly 1390 on the nose... I hope no one sits there and eats two cherry tomatos or drinks one cup of broth to hit their target exactly!

I often find it far easier to eat my exercise cals the next day and then roll the next day over and so forth. Some girls do average their cals over the whole week if they do a similar amount every week and can estimate it fairly close. Some eat half back, some eat it based on a percentage of the cals burnt. There is even few of us that have this crazy idea that meeting nutritional targets is more important that cals eaten (shh, don't tell anyone I said that) and should be the top priority.
If you know that you have made your targets for vitamins, nutrients, etc then do what you think is best. Unfortunately some people just aren't at the point where they can make that decision and need to follow the program to the letter until they can understand it better.

The jury is still out on whether to eat back cals or not...
The Michelle Bridges book that Im following gives you a 1200 cals meal plan plus 1hr of exercise a day. I've also read a few things that say it's silly to compare the calories you eat to the calories you burn- somehow they're different.

I guess if I were doing a lot of exercise (I'm lucky to burn over 300 cals now Im lighter and fitter) then I would eat back 1/2 your exercise cals and if you dont lose weight in about 2 weeks, dont eat them. But if you can eat back your exercise cals and still lose weight then make the most of it! Enjoy a few pieces of dark chocolate or a glass of red wine!

That nasty red exclamation point is CK telling you that you have not eaten enough calories.

Your base calories are 1341, then if you did 616 calories of exercise, you ADD that to the 1341 which makes your quota for the day 1957 calories.

If you ate those calories then you would get that nice green tick you are after, along with a better weight loss than you are currently achieving.

I usually aim to get up to 100 either side of my calorie recommendation.

I haven't been actively tracking over Christmas and I need to undo some damage, so I will be again now.

Yo, the difference between Michelle Bridges and Calorie King is Michelle B will set a 'time' on a diet. Such as the final 4 kilos in 4 weeks, a 12 week body transformation, etc. It's not longterm. Calorie king is a very different thing, you could do CK for years at a time, only very occasionally tweaking cals.

Both are valid methods for weight loss. But they're apples and oranges and should be compared accordingly.
