Ok, I need to lose weight. I thought I knew the basics, what's relatively healthy, what's not, what to eat, what to avoid, but speaking to a guy in work (who to me, is healthy, looks good, always seems to eat good) and he was telling me:

Have a banana before you eat anything in the morning, gets your metablism started etc
Also he always has plain yoghurt, mixed with fruit for breakfast.

He told me not to bother with skinny milk as because they take the fat out, they then replace it with sugar etc to get the flavour back up.

Another woman told me that I wouldn't eat Tim Tams if I knew what went into them. i.e. not proper chocolate, so they put all this artiificial stuff in, to get the brown colour, to make it look like chocolate.

And you know when people tell you things, like the examples above. Now I don't know if the above is true, I'm not claiming it is.

What I am asking, is for some tips/education to help me.

What do you know, that you can educate me with .... please :)

The banana isnt a bad idea. I have a banana in my porridge in the morning along with a yoghurt or piece of fruit.

I think the biggest obsticle I had was learning to eat more often but smaller meals. I really struggled with the concept of eating more but healthier.

Id suggest doing the CK program and going through the levels. Its a great guide on how to change your eating habits and have a healthier view of food.

I drink Physical because I like it, I can have more milk in my diet without stressing about fat and calories too much, and it's got added calcium. So that works for me.

I don't eat Tim Tams as a general rule, because they're a really processed item, and where possible, it's good to really minimise these sorts of things. But you know what? If you have them here and there, I don't think it will kill you, provided you've accounted for it in your allowance.

And you can have a banana in the morning, why not? But as for the idea it will kick start your metabolism? Anything you eat will do that, so just try to eat good food, and find out what you enjoy and what works for you.

There are no hard and fast rules about what you have to do, but you can learn as you go about what foods are better choices, and what foods are ones which are really good to incorporate into your daily diet.

I love Tim Tams... So yes, I allow for them. My main problem with them is I cant stop myself eating the whole pack, so I buy them, eat one then palm the packet off.

Avoiding *diet* products is a good idea as well, often the full fat version has far less filler ingredients in them and less cane sugar/artificial sweetner than the *diet* version.

Obviously this is a personal choice and it depends if you want to eat clean (no artificial ingredients etc) or you don't mind.

"He told me not to bother with skinny milk as because they take the fat out, they then replace it with sugar etc to get the flavour back up."

A widely held belief, but in fact not true.

When the fat is removed from the milk, the "sugar", which is not table sugar as people might imagine, but lactose, remains the same and is therefore present in a slightly higher proportion because of the removed part of the milk. No "sugar" of any kind is added.

Skim milk has marginally more sugar than whole milk, but since there is relatively little sugar in milk to begin with, this tiny little bit of increased sugar is almost insignificant. This sugar is far less fattening than most of the sugars found in other foods and products; and skim milk is also far less fattening due to a much more significant drop in both fat (especially saturated fat) and calories.

There's an infinite number of food myths and fads, that some people choose to live by, but really are easily contradicted. Google is your friend :)

The other thing is that the milk we buy from the supermarket is mainly made up of milk sugar, which is why many people have problems digesting it. Raw milk is the best way to go as it has only been lightly heated or not heated at all and still has the goodness remaining. Raw milk is however quite hard to find unless you have your own cow or live near some farmers (it should not be consumed by pregnant women or people with suppressed immune systems though).

When I drink milk, I drink full fat as I find it much easier to digest than skim or low fat, but for me that is due to the milk sugar levels.

Go with what your body tells you is right.

One of the best things to kickstart your metabolism in the morning is a cup of warm water with a wedge of lemon at least 30 minutes before eating (the principle is based on Chinese medicine principles).

It aids with digestion and I've found it really helpful with bloating. I wouldn't drink it more than once a day though - I've read too much can affect the health of your teeth.

Hi Rick, welcome to CK.

I personally find a really good way to start is to spent a few days eating what you normally would but weighing (get some kitchen scales if you don't have some already) everything and entering it. That should give you a good idea of exactly where your cals are coming from.

Then you could spend a few days changing one thing each day so that you can ease into making better choices. Find a few things you can swap out eg, if you like potato chips maybe try some rice crackers or crispbreads instead.

I think people can get themselves bogged down when they first start in all the things they are told are myths or are facts or they should or shouldn't do and it can just seem like too much. If you make it too hard for yourself there is a good chance it might just all seem like too much effort.

I think it's a self evolving cycle where you do something, observe that it might not be the best way and then try something new, then you see how that works and so on until over time you have progressed but at the same time done your own info gathering on the things that make sense for you and works for you. If you read something that doesn't seem right or do something that doesn't seem right then do some more investigation and eventually you will find what meshes for you.

I have personally come around in my 'journey' to a point where I use full fat products but more because of the way the milk is manufactured to make it skim and for the fact that I use less and it tastes so much better. So I get better taste and no more calories because I've used half as much. Same for cheese. Yogurts are really dicey and my biggest bugbear because some are them ARE full of additional sugars, some just have the lactose but some really should be labelled pudding in my opinion. But that was just something that took a while of looking around and reading, etc to change and it felt right to me. It won't be the same for everyone.

Also, doing the CK program under the club menu, that is an excellent place to start.

Good luck!

lol

You probably do have a pretty good idea of what you should be eating.
The problem for most of us is putting that knowledge into action - and portion sizes. Most of us simply eat a bit too much.

Do work through the CK uni. It summarises basic good healthy eating and exercise habits. It will confirm for you what you know.

Don't believe everything that you are told or read on the internet.

Remember also the changes that you are making to your diet and exercise have to be changes that you can live with. The changes need to be long term/permanent otherwise you will only end up back where you started or even in a worse position.

Enjoy the journey.

Welcome. I think you'll do fine. A healthy scepticism about nutritional advice is one of the most important things to have, and you seem to have that already.

As you will see from this thread alone, there are almost as many opinions on CK as there are posters, and if you turn here for education, you need to be prepared for that.

This is my take:

Bananas are great, but they're not magic. There's nothing inherent about a banana that will kickstart your metabolism more than any other food. I often have them with breakfast because they taste good and they keep me full. I've also found by trial and error that for me a banana and peanut butter on toast is the perfect food before a long run.

Although it is true that low fat dairy products like yoghurt often have extra sugar added to make them taste better, that isn't the case with milk. Low fat milk is simply milk with the fat removed and nothing added. Personally, I drink it as much for the taste as for the reduced fat. Full fat milk tastes too creamy and rich to me. From my reading, I also believe that the processes of pasteurisation and homogenisation have negligible effects on the nutritional value of milk, so I'll take the stuff in cartons and avoid the risks of things like salmonella, E. coli and bovine TB, thank you very much. FWIW, it's illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption in Australia.

As for Tim Tams, I don't have a packet in front of me(I wish I did!) but the magic of google tells me that the first ingredient listed is milk chocolate. It's probably not top quality chocolate but they taste good enough to me. I have no doubt that there are probably colours and flavours in there too, but I'm under no illusion that Tim Tams are a health food, so given that I eat as well as possible the rest of the time, I don't think the occasional one will kill me.

As for my tips and advice. Use CK and the tools available. Read the threads for newbies, do the programme and start off slowly. Eat less, move more - to my mind it's really that simple. I agree with MillyJayne that a good start is just to log your normal food and get an idea of how much you eat at the moment. After that, just aim to reach your daily calorie target. As you get used to it and how it works for your body, you can finesse things. You'll soon realise that although you could theoretically lose weight on nothing but chocolate, you'll feel fuller and better overall if you use your calories in a more balanced way. Ask questions, because there are a lot of wise people here, but keep an open mind about the answers and be prepared to do your own reading when you get conflicting advice.

It's also a good idea to avoid anyone who seems too dogmatic and evangelistic - there is no one perfect way for everyone and anyone who tells you there is probably has their own agenda.

Orlando you can buy raw milk here in Australia. There are several places in each state that sell it, but it is usually sold for cosmetic purposes to by pass the law...

Excellent, thank you very much for all the replies so far.

I don't feel I eat too bad, but can tend to overeat, so that's where I'm going to start. That and reading what I eat.

Will take a look at the CK uni.

Just need to eat more of the good stuff, less of the bad.

Thanks again for the help. :)

Seraphina, that's why I said it was illegal to sell it for human "consumption". I think it's commonly sold as bath milk and I'm sure many people do drink it but, as I said, I don't see why you'd take the risk.

Yes, I actually found some for sale at a market, and it wasn't till we got home I noticed it said it was for beauty purposes or similar. I realised why it said that, but the guy and his stand made no mention of this at all, so I reckon he could easily get into trouble if he didn't attempt to make this more obvious. It was clear he was just selling it as pure milk for drinking.

My tip is

" Eat as naturally as possible, If it ran, swam etc or came from the ground / off a tree. Its almost safe to bet its OK"

Anything processed, out of a packet and you have no idea whats in it or how it was made. Dont put it in your mouth.

You can go crazy on sugar ideas, fruit, bread, more of this nutrient or more of this one because its good / bad for you but simplicity is the easiest way to make a life long wellbeing choice.

Ive heard the warm water with lemon idea, The fruit idea in the morning. I personally do eat a banana in the morning first thing because I get up at 3-4am for work and dont want breaky but mid shift at 6am im starving so a banana in my bag is easy. Its for not additional diet benefit. I then eat a normal breaky around 8am. I also eat the banana because I dont like drinking coffee to give me that kick but getting up at that time in the morning, I need something! Or my eyes are drooping by 6am.

Depends on the direction you want to go. Im not that fussed about all the minor details. Some people go mad on eliminating certain sugars or certain types of fats etc. I have had stints where I have gone batty on such things but I give up.

Everything in moderation, Naturally as possible, Know what your eating and drink water :)

Hi Rick welcome, I am also a newer member to the forums as well.
You have been given some really great suggestions in all the posts so far. I think the best place for you to start is "first things first" and get off to a really good start in the right direction, so your enthusiasm and energy to lose this weight is not wasted. TRACHIH3 & CANCER84 hit the nail on the head by pointing you to the new members forum and the CK program, you have got to go there first and just start learning as you go Rick. Also you could click the link just below and visit the Success forums and read peoples success and motivational stories and see their before and after photo's. I found these really helpful and inspiring.

Rick don't underestimate your ability to learn and adapt to the right healthy eating style and watch a lot of those vice foods that hold you back, those same foods that you didn't think you could do without, just drift off into some unimportant place allowing your weight to return to where it should be.

LINK...
http://www.calorieking.com.au/community/forums/posts.php?forum_id=8&thread_id=131403

As MIILYJAYNE also suggested; start out easy, give yourself the space to get comfortable with weighing your foods and understanding portion sizes, the rest will just start to fall into place, quicker than you realise. My experience of past failures was they were almost alway's born out of my great urgency to get there (the goal weight) before I had even got off go, so to speak.

Remember Rick - 1st Things !st! you will waste less time and become far more focused and organised and you know what that will mean !

All the very best Rick,

Steve

PS I loved Tim Tams -every night I loved them, I couldn't do without them ( one of my Vice foods) unbelievable as it might seem - we have had an amical divorce and are living happily ever after (without each other.)
