I'm an overthinker.. spend the whole time thinking about this and that, and money, and my future, and often dont even notice the journey. Not helpful I know....

In the next 6 months or so, my commute will go from 15 minutes to 40 or so... Not that bad, but hunger gets the better of me... Drive thru...

Can you bus it? I used to do about an hour each way and the bus was great because I could read. Luckily the bus stopped right outside Stanton library too cause I went through a mound of books.

A good radio show might help? Maybe you could find some audio files for something you've wanted to learn like speaking Spanish or something?

To learn Spanish have a look at the pimsleur audio program. I've had pretty good success with it for a few different languages (Spanish, Polish, Russian).

Main problem with it though is it requires repeating words out loud (for both pronunciation purposes as well as learning to instantly recall). So if you're on a public train/bus it might be a bit weird calling out random words. In a car not so bad.

I have a long commute (1hr - the price I pay for living in acerage, and very happy to pay it)
I choose public transport though - its actually the fav part of my day where I read, browse mags, listen to podcasts . Though I am lucky to have flexible working hours so I can miss peak hour and travel when the trains are quiet
Some of the trains have free Wifi too

If you are driving, I think the idea of an audio book is a good one - or podcasts through an ipod?

Mine's a 45 min Train ride from the city to Mooroolbark... I read, listen to music, play with facebook on my phone. In the morning I listen to the radio, some of the morning shows they have are quite good (and I love Chrissy Swan :) )

I don't know much about Brisbane public transport, can you take bikes on the trains?

I ride my bike the 9.6kms to work twice a week, it's a great way to star the day. If you are driving 90mins you probably can't ride the whole way but can you ride part of the way and public transport the rest? does your work have showers?

On the days when I don't ride I drive to the train station and spend the rest of the trip reading, or just people watching :) I couldn't stand driving in, I hate dealing with traffic and parking, especially in the morning when my patience level is low!

I'll add to JJs list

In Our Time -http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/in-our-time/
Massive range of subject matter, often quite obscure and suprisingly interesting.

Fat2Fit Radio http://www.fat2fitradio.com/category/podcast/
Two guys who have their heads generally screwed on and suggest a system similar to CK, basically living the lifestyle of the person you want to be to become that person. Every week or three they chart how they are going with their weight loss, bust some myths, suggest recipes, answer questions etc.

All in the mind - http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/allinthemind/
"All in the Mind is RN’s weekly exploration of all things mental - a program about the mind, brain and behaviour, and the endlessly fascinating interactions between them."

Will have to look up the conversations one. I love me a good podcast :)

I drive about 50 mins in the morning, and an hour 10 in the afternoon, to and from the city. Audio books are the best thing ever. I plug my iphone into the jack in my stereo (Yaris has one built in) and I've listened to some great books. I pick long ones like the Game of Thrones series, Stephen King's new one 11.22.63 (30 hours of awesome you must read or listen to), and currently I'm listening to Bryce Courtney's the Potato Factory when I'm alone, and Reamde by Neil Stephenson when my son is commuting with me for TAFE 3 times a week (a kind of gaming/techno thriller that appeals to both of us).

I love music as much as the next person, but the same songs over and over day after day with the radio announcers hyper annoying talking in between was just too much. I find the Audio Books keep my mind engaged, and if it's a really good story I actually look forward to "me" time in the car.

I would recommend that you only listen to things you don't need to concentrate on.

Your main focus while commuting as a driver should be on doing just that. Driving.

As someone who rides a motorbike and a pushbike distracted drivers are the biggest menace on our roads.

LOL listening to an Audiobook is no more taxing than listening to the news on the radio. If listening to something while driving is too much of a challenge, then mayhaps those people shouldn't be driving at all, the bus would be much safer.

TALLY I never used the bluetooth, my OH uses it in his car and it always sounds staticky and horrible. I just have a cable that goes from the iphone headphone jack to the same on the front of my car stereo, and put the stereo on AUX. It's perfectly clear.

Some people shouldn't be on our roads.

I'm saying don't listen to something that will take up a lot of your concentration. I like audio books myself when driving, but will choose light hearted things, not something that is too serious and takes concentration to follow. You will either miss out a lot of what is happening in the book or a lot of what is happening on the road if you concentrate on a complex plot - or try to learn a language.

A 90 minute driving commute isn;t 90 minutes of free time in your day.

It can take only a second or two of being distracted to have a major impact on your day.

I saw a program on fatigue and driver performance a while ago where they reported a scientific paper had just done a bunch of tests on what is the effects of doing different things while driving like eating, listing to music, etc. they tested not only external driver performance but brain waves and eye movement.

This study showed that a audio program that prompts you for a response (like a langauge lesson) actually increases your alertness on the road and allows you to stave off the negative effects of fatigue for longer. Interesting eh?

I hope that puts your mind on ease.

Texting eating reading changing CDs are all out esp if bikes or motorbikes are around. My BIL had a very bad accident when he was younger and is still suffering chronic pain. I am with Catie eyes on the road.
