People in relationships with 30-40 years between them.....

Both of my parents were 33 when they had me, 31 when they had my brother. Not too old, not too young, I'd say just about right. You still have many years ahead of you, as long as you are fit and healthy with no medical conditions and yet you have had the chance to live a little before settling down and having kids.

I think having kids in your teenage years is more selfish than having kids at an older age. Young kids (ie, 15-16) simply do not have the maturity to raise a child. In saying that, there are many young mothers who do a fantastic job. Even 17-20 is a tough time for a woman to become a mother, whether it is biologically "right" or not. Maturity, knowledge, experience, education, future - these all play a part too. A young mum is more likely to struggle or require constant support from their parents (assuming they still live at home) rather than an older woman who is married, has worked, has saved, has probablly travelled or lived a fulfilling life before having kids.

Not meaning to fuel any arguements here, that's just my two cents :) I don't think age for kids matters a lot. But I had a friend in high school whose dad was 60 and she had a sister in Kindy - that would've been an interesting one to explain to friends...

I think its all up to the people involved. My long term relationships have always been with guys over 10 years older. Funny thing is i broke up with them both because they were immature and still had no direction in life and had no ambitions. My dads friend and his wife have 15 years between them and have been together for years. They are the sweetedt couple and you can tell they really love each other, which is great to see. All you can do is be supportive.

as for the other debat going on....

I come from a family with the age gap between the eldest and youngest being 20 years. My parents are still full of life and in touch with the world around them. If anything the younger ones (im one of the eldest) have it far better then we did as kids as my parents are more financially secure and able to offer them more then they could us older kids. Being so young they had no knowledge or life experience behind them to fall back on and help them through. I kow my mother is more mentally fit now then when she was when I was little.

I remember being young and saying i didn’t want kids past 25 because I would be to old...glad i didn’t do that!! I would not of been as mature and finically secure to even look after a baby.

I also know women who can’t conceive and know the heart ache they go through. To say they don’t deserve the same right as every other women out there is absurd. Look at all the mothers who are unfit to care for a child or abuse and neglect their children.

I'm aiming for 25, I think 30 would be too old - but for completely different reasons to those in this arguement. I have highly increased chances of dying by the time I'm 50 judging from hereditary illnesses within my mother's line of family. That's the reason I'm on CK trying to lose weight - to give myself the best chance at a longer life where I can have kids, and meet my own grandkids. My mother didn't get the chance to meet her grandkids (that don't yet exist) as she died at 52. Her mother died at 53 and only got to see my brother for about 6 months - never met me. And her mother's mother, well, similar age, same illness, no known definite cause.

There are so many other reasons why someone would have kids at any age, whether it's young OR old...

the age-gap doesn't bother me either way in relationships. i do agree that the individuals involved in the relationship do need to share a similiar maturity level and life direction.

ideally people choosing to have children should have some maturity and stability before they conceive a child, but we don't live in an ideal world. things happen, women find themselves pregnant before they're ready. most people with children do the best they can with what they have to work with at the time.

when i was 16 i wanted a child. now that i'm older i don't ever want to have kids. unless my major life goals of stability and authenticity come into fruition, and unless i have a radical change of lifestyle, i'll leave the child bearing to those with more maturity than me. :smile1:
